When free agency kicks off in a month—March 9—there will be many free agent running backs the Denver Broncos will target.

Breece Hall is a hot name right now, although the competition may be fierce for him, and his asking price may be too rich for the Broncos blood.

Others include Tyler Allgeier, Rachaad White, Rico Dowdle, and even bringing back J.K. Dobbins.

Let's examine the best fits for Denver.

Denver Broncos Free Agent Running Back Targets

With free agency less than a month away, Denver Broncos fans are excited about the team's chance to improve, going from an AFC Championship Game loss and hoping to go even further in the postseason.

Running back has become a big need for the Broncos. Yes, they excelled at running for the first half of the season, but then the position lacked consistency when J.K. Dobbins went down in Week 10 with a foot injury.

RJ Harvey showed a lot of flashes, and his pass-catching ability is phenomenal. But he's not ready to be a 3-down back in the NFL.

So, the Broncos will look to compliment him, or, for him to be the complimentary piece to another back.

Here's a ranking of Denver Broncos free agent running back targets:

1. Rachaad White

White is a versatile, strong back who has been playing the 1b role with the Buccaneers behind Bucky Irving. White is underrated. His best season came in 2023 as the full-time starter, when he rushed for 990 yards, 6 touchdowns, with 64 receptions for 549 yards and 3 more scores. All were career-highs.

He still put up 1,006 scrimmage yards and 9 touchdowns in 2024, even with Irving as the featured back. And as he took more a backseat last year, White proved his worth when Irving was injured for most of the season.

While White is a great receiver, last season was his best as a runner; he enjoyed an 87.2 rushing grade per Pro Football Focus, 4th-best among running backs, and didn't fumble once. And his success rate (53.8%) was the highest of his career, too.

One knock on him is he ranks 34th of 35 in yards per carry since 2022 for running backs who rushed 500-plus times. (Career 3.9 YPC). One upside is he's been consistent and better the last two years (4.3 YPC).

At 6' and 215 pounds, he's a much bigger back than Harvey, which would compliment Denver's second-year guy. Plus, White is a great goal line back.

Over the Cap guesses his valuation at $6.2 million, which is a decent going rate for a back and basically half of the next guy on the list. Which is a huge selling point over Breece Hall.

2. Breece Hall

Breece Hall could be a great back for the Broncos.

Unlike White, Hall has been more of the main guy with the Jets, although Braelon Allen did take some of his carries in 2024.

As the primary back in 2025, Hall went over the 1,000-yard mark for the first time, rushing for 1,065 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also caught 36 balls for 350 yards and 1 TD. He also had a solid success rate (49.8%) when running the pigskin, and an 82.4% success rate on 3rd downs over his entire career. What makes him special is his breakaway speed. Hall ran for 26 explosive (10+ yard) runs last year; White had half as many (13).

Keep in mind, he put up those great numbers on a terrible team. The Jets did have to lean on him more than normal teams, too, though; New York had little-to-no passing game last year. His 83.7 running grade was 11th among backs per PFF. And at 5'11" and 217, he would compliment Harvey well, like White.

Overall, he was very impressive. One downside is Hall is expected to make $11-12 million range next year. Do the Broncos want to spend that much on him? They currently have $28.9 million in cap space and have a bunch of holes to fill.

We learned following the AFC Championship Game Denver injured Drake Maye’s shoulder. It’s safe to say the Broncos with Bo Nix would’ve beaten New England.

3. Tyler Allgeier

Allgeier is similar to White in that he's been the 1b guy—this time to Bijan Robinson in Atlanta—and yet, he's been a great goal line running back.

When he was the starter, way back in 2022, Allgeier ran for 1,035 yards and 3 TDs, with 16 receptions for 139 yards and 1 score.

Fast forward to 2025 and Allgeier only rushed for 514 yards, a career-low, but he had a career-high 8 touchdowns. 7 of those TDs came within the red zone, six of them within 10 yards. He even scored more rushing touchdowns than Robinson (7) in basically half as many snaps.

Straight up, the dude has a nose for the goal line.

Because Bijan has been the main man in A-town, Allgeier has a lot of tread still on the tires. He could split with Harvey well, without completely overshadowing him. But he's not quite as explosive, nor as good a receiver as the first two backs on this list.

Like White, Allgeier had zero fumbles in 2025, which is crucial. He also forced a 12th-best in missed tackles forced since entering the league in 2022, and averaged 3.1 yards per carry after contact, too. His 49.0% success rate is the lowest of these potential Denver Broncos free agent running backs, though.

One more big positive for Allgeier: He's only expected to command about $2.6M per year. Which is just slightly more than J.K. Dobbins earned last year ($2M).

Denver Broncos Bo Nix had an Elite Negative Play Rate in 2025
Bo Nix is the best quarterback in the NFL in avoiding negative plays. That gives the Denver Broncos a chance on offense more often than not.

4. J.K. Dobbins

I'm in favor of re-signing Dobbins. He was great for the first nine weeks of the season and pushed hard to get healthy in time to play in Super Bowl LX if the Broncos made it there.

From Pro Football Focus:

J.K. Dobbins was excellent through the first 10 weeks of the season, earning an 80.8 PFF rushing grade with 32 missed tackles forced and 21 explosive carries before a season-ending foot injury.

He also had a 53.7% success rate, and hasn't fumbled since 2020. Dobbins had the power and vision to run well between the tackles, which really helped Harvey as the guy outside and as the receiving back.

More positives about Dobbins is he knows the offense, he knows the teammates, and understands exactly where he would fit into the team dynamic.

The downside of Dobbins is he's always injured. He's never played an entire season after coming into the league in 2020.

If Denver could sign him for around $2-3M again, I'd definitely endorse that move.

Honorable Mention

A few more backs that are available, but aren't as good of fits as the top-4 free agent running backs.

  • Rico Dowdle: He's enjoyed back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and split carries with Chuba Hubbard last year in Carolina, but he's more a fit for a power running game than a zone game. He scored all 6 of his touchdowns within the opponent's 10 yard line, so he's a great goal line back.
  • Kenneth Gainwell: He's an exciting and explosive back, but he's too small and similar to Harvey.
  • Brian Robinson Jr.: He would be an interesting prospect, especially if Denver were to sign him for only $1.5M per year, as is expected. He's more of a backup guy, but at 6'1" and 225 pounds, he could be the thunder to Harvey's lightning.

Where others have running backs ranked

Multiple sites have ranked these guys generally, just not necessarily their fits with the Broncos.

PFF has them free agent running backs ranked like this:

  1. Walker
  2. Hall
  3. Etienne
  4. Dowdle
  5. Allgeier

They even have Kenny Walker going to the Broncos. But, that piece was written before the Super Bowl, before Walker took Super Bowl MVP. I expect him to be back with the Seahawks, who will have a 6th-most cap space at $72.3 million. Especially considering Zach Charbonnet tore his ACL in the Divisional Round game; they'll need to lean on Walker in 2026.

If Denver somehow could pull off signing Walker, it would be an insane steal.

It almost feels that way with Hall, too. FOX Sports has him going back to the Jets, and both the Chiefs and Texans also want Hall. It could be a dogfight to get him, which could help push that dollar figure higher. That could mean the Chiefs are priced out, given they are $55M in the hole in the salary cap, and the Texans are currently in the red by $1.5M too.

Ironically, fans on Bluesky and Reddit are talking like Breece Hall to the Broncos is a done deal. It's anything but that.

Signing him would be massive, but they must decide how much capital they want to spend at running back.

FOX has free agent running backs ranked very similarly:

  1. Walker
  2. Hall
  3. Etienne
  4. Javonte Williams
  5. Dowdle
  6. Dobbins
  7. White
  8. Najee Harris
  9. Allgeier
  10. Kenneth Gainwell

Obviously, Williams isn't coming back to Denver.

But, Dobbins could be.

Honestly, there's a huge number of talented running backs in free agency Denver could go after. It will be exciting to see who they choose.
