Hello and welcome to Broncos Blitz!

My name is Rich Kurtzman, and you may remember me from a now forgotten website called Twitter, my previously published book “Chasing Lombardi: The Elway-Manning Era” or my writing on Mile High Sports, Broncos Wire, and many other sites which will not be named here.

Or, you may not know me at all. Which is great!

Who is Rich Kurtzman?

I’m a dude who grew up in Denver in the 80s and 90s during the John Elway Era. I ran to the fridge during commercial breaks to grab my dad a beer and not shake it as I sped back down the hall. I relished in the Broncos Super Bowl wins, and was devastated when they lost the 1996 Divisional Round game to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mark Freakin’ Brunell, man.

In Denver, at least back in the day, the Broncos were religion. Every Sunday, men, women, and children gathered around to see St. John and St. Terrell lead the Broncos to the promised land. Crazily, it actually happened.

Back then, I heard of the Broncos going to three Super Bowls in four years, losing them all in greater and greater heartbreaking fashion.

Then, Mike “The Mastermind” Shanahan engineered an offense that got the most out of and aged Elway, leaning on the legs of Terrell Davis. And the West Coast attack. And a revolutionary zone blocking scheme that every single NFL team uses today.

One could argue 1997-1998 was the heyday of the Denver Broncos franchise and nothing has come close since.

Others may argue 2015 was a bigger deal; but it’s hard to take away the impact of a first-ever title. Especially when the team was around for nearly 60 years before they finally won one “For John!”

And considering the Broncos roots–beginning as an AFL team, playing in a baseball stadium, wearing those god-awful brown and gold jerseys their first year–finally winning Super Bowl XXXII was definitely a dream come true.

Since then, I’ve watched basically every Broncos game (save a few during the 2020 and 2022 seasons) and have been writing about the team since 2010. I was credentialed to cover the Broncos in 2015 and credentialed to cover Colorado State Rams football and basketball from 2011-2019.

Rich Kurtzman way back in 2017, on the Colorado State Rams beat, when they played the Rocky Mountain Showdown at Mile High.

I’m a die-hard Denver Broncos fan and I’m here to bring you Denver Broncos news, opinion, and history articles.

What is Broncos Blitz?

Broncos Blitz is a Denver Broncos website, with Broncos news and opinion written by Rich Kurtzman. For now, that’s all it is, but I hope to expand and grow over time.

Broncos Blitz is:

  • Fun
  • Long-form content
  • Unique stats and perspectives

The Denver Broncos are definitely one of the most-popular teams in the NFL, and there’s a ton of places you can get your Broncos news. That’s why I’m not going to be posting multiple pieces per day about every transaction the team makes–I did that for multiple years at Mile High Sports–Broncos Blitz is going to be a place with less frequent posts, but most will be longer form and opinion-based columns.

In the saturated Broncos market, I’ll continue to strive to find new, interesting, and untouched stats and information to give Broncos fans a fuller picture of their team. Sometimes, those stats will help to build an opinion piece, and sometimes they’ll be standalone.

Speaking of Broncos opinion: Here come the hot takes!

I’m a Broncos fan, but I’m not wearing orange-colored glasses. Everything isn’t always dandy from my point of view. I like to call out players and coaches when they make mistakes because that’s what we should be doing; not blindly, endlessly defending everything they do. Through the criticism, we’re holding the players and coaches and owners accountable because, ultimately, we all just want to see the Broncos hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy again (and again).

For now, there’s a lot to be happy with in Broncos Country.

Denver just won their biggest game since Super Bowl 50, a hard-fought win over the previously undefeated champion Eagles in Philly. The defense is playing lights-out, and Bo Nix seems to have finally warmed up.

Sean Payton looks to have his team squarely in contention for a second straight playoff berth, possibly an AFC West title, and maybe–just maybe–a Super Bowl.

Thanks for checking Broncos Blitz out. I’m happy you’re here.
