5 Denver Broncos Free Agency Options On Day 2, Onward

A look at five possible free agents the Denver Broncos could sign on Day 2 of Free Agency or in the near future. They still need RB and WR depth.

Day 1 of Denver Broncos free agency was incredibly disappointing.

They didn't sign a single player from outside the organization. Instead, Denver decided to run it back with Justin Strnad and Alex Singleton at linebacker, and J.K. Dobbins at running back.

It was clear Dobbins was a fallback option for the Broncos, and after missing out on the trade for David Montgomery as well as the signing opportunity of Travis Etienne, Denver re-signed their oft-injured running back.

So, are the Broncos going to sign anyone new?

Denver Broncos Free Agency Options on Day 2

After re-signing Strnad, Singleton, and Dobbins, the Broncos have around $14.5M in cap space, although it hasn't been updated by Over the Cap yet. They have the Broncos at $24.5M without Dobbins nor Strnad's numbers, and Spotrac puts Denver at $16.8M without each. If Spotrac is right, and Dobbins+Strnad is $16M, Denver is completely out of cap space.

The Broncos could still restructure a handful of contracts and free up some cap space, if so, who could they sign?

Brian Robinson Jr.

OK, not a splash signing, but a quality backup running back to add into the mix with Dobbins and RJ Harvey.

At 6'1" and 225 pounds, Robinson is a bruiser and he ran for 53.5% of his yards between the tackles last year. All told, he rushed for 400 yards on 92 carries (4.3 YPC) and 2 touchdowns with the 49ers as a backup. His 54.3% success rate was pretty stellar (49.6% was league average).

Over the Cap projects him making $1.5M this year, meaning he'd be a low-risk option and insurance plan if Dobbins went down due to injury.

Jeremy McNichols

Speaking of former Commanders backs, McNichols is another option.

Last year was arguably his best in the NFL: he rushed for 221 yards and a touchdown on 44 carries, a strong 5.0 YPC, and caught 25 passes for 196 yards.

Interestingly, 54.3% of his yards came between center and right guard, which is a strong point for the Broncos with Quinn Meinerz running dudes over. Obviously, his numbers aren't eye-popping, but he was the third back in Washington who filled in when need be.

At a projected $1.5M, the Broncos could afford him.

Nick Westbrook-Ikhine

Westbrook-Ikhine is a boom-or-bust No. 3/4 receiver that could fit well with the Broncos. For one, he's tall, and Payton loves tall receivers. He's 6'2" and 211 pounds.

He could also fit because he's coming off a down season and his value should be suppressed a bit. Spotrac says he's worth $3.1M per year, which is doable for Denver.

Westbrook-Ikhine went off in 2024; he set career-highs with 497 yards and 9 touchdowns with the Titans. Then, he signed with the mess Miami Dolphins, and caught 11 balls for 89 yards.

Could Westbrook-Ikhine see a revival in Denver?

Miles Sanders

Miles Sanders is along the same lines of Robinson; he's a backup who could come in for cheap, but he has a ton of NFL experience.

Sanders only played four games last year after knee and ankle injuries sent him to the IR. In his limited time last year he ran for 117 yards on 20 carries and 1 touchdown. At 28 years old, he's been declining lately, but at $800k, Sanders would be a very low-risk option for depth.

Romeo Doubs Signed in New England

Update: Doubs signed with the Patriots. It's a monstrous 4-year, $80M deal.

The Broncos reached out to the veteran wide receiver, but "Nothing at this point seems to be hot," per Chris Tomasson.

Doubs would've been the No. 2 wideout in Denver and would elevate the entire room from being arguably the worst group in the NFL.

Honorable Mention: Alvin Kamara

Now that the Saints signed Travis Etienne, they have a new starter making a ton of money. That means Kamara could possibly be cut.

If he is, the Broncos could bring him in. Sean Payton loves his guys. That's why Adam Trautman just re-signed a new deal. That's why Wil Lutz is the kicker. And why Darren Rizzi is the special teams coach.

It wouldn't be a surprise if Payton brought in Kamara. But, he'd have to be OK being the No. 2 guy behind Dobbins and just a role player at this point.
