The Denver Broncos have been linked to David Njoku by Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. Could Denver finally make a free agency signing with the TE?

The Denver Broncos have been linked to David Njoku, the veteran tight end formerly of the Cleveland Browns.

Denver's had an incredibly quiet free agency period. They've only re-signed former Broncos as the only team to not sign a single out-of-house free agent.

Could Njoku be the first they sign from another team?

Why the Denver Broncos Didn’t Sign Any New Free Agents
Through nearly three days of NFL Free Agency, the Denver Broncos have yet to sign any new free agents while re-signing a ton of their own. The “why” explained here.

According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the Broncos are interested in signing Njoku.

"I’m not sure the Broncos are done yet at tight end. Denver has had interest in Dallas Goedert, and David Njoku is still unsigned," Breer said on Monday morning.

Within hours of publishing Goedert had been re-signed by the Eagles.

That leaves Njoku.

He's been a name Broncos Country has floated around all offseason in hopes the team would improve the tight end room.

Meanwhile, they re-signed Adam Trautman, Lance Krull, and Nate Adkins while Evan Engram is on the final year of his 2-year contract with the team.

For now, it's the exact same tight end room from 2025, minus Marcedes Lewis.

What would Njoku bring to the Broncos?

He's a 9-year veteran who was explosive in 2023. His 882 yards were sixth-most among tight ends, and his 6 touchdowns were tied for second-most that year.

But he's seen that production fall steadily the last two consecutive seasons. Down to 505 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2024, and down further to 293 yards and 4 TDs last year. His Pro Football Focus grades have similarly declined along the same timeline.

Last year his 55.9 overall grade by PFF was his second-worst of his career, and just ahead of Engram (56.9) as the 35th and 36th-best tight ends in the league last season.

At this point, Njoku's a decent backup tight end who still has a nose for the goal line. He's 29 years old and missed 12 combined games the last two years.

But it does seem like he could be a solid complimentary piece, and a better receiving tight end than Trautman.

Spotrac still has him valued as a $10M player, but that seems way too high for an aging, declining tight end. If the Broncos can sign him for around $5-6M, they should get a deal done.

Yes, the Broncos are already spending $19-plus million at the tight end position, but they need to upgrade there for the offense and quarterback Bo Nix's sake.

Last year, Mike Clay projected the Broncos tight end room as a 7-out-of-10, which was middle of the pack. But that high a rating was heavily dependent on Engram balling out, which he was expected to do. Clay projected Engram to have 80 receptions for 711 yards and 3 touchdowns. Instead, he had 50 for 461 and 1 TD.

Will the Broncos finally go after a free agent that wasn't with the team last year?
